Two orientations
The card’s meaning
The Lovers concerns how a significant connection or choice joins desire to values and conduct. Its wider perspective includes the consequences of commitment while remaining rooted in the importance of love and affinity. A choice matters because of what is being joined and how that relationship is lived.
Upright
The Lovers joins connection with choice: desire becomes meaningful through what it asks you to value.
The Lovers concerns love, connection, and the choices through which they are lived. Attraction can begin a bond; what people value and how they treat one another shape what they can commit to together. The card brings desire, conviction, and action into relation, giving each a place in an openly chosen commitment. This applies beyond romance, wherever a meaningful choice asks what is being joined or valued and which consequences come with it.

Reversed
The Lovers reversed reveals a choice or connection whose values and actions are no longer moving together.
The Lovers reversed concerns a choice or connection whose values and actions are not working together. Affection may remain while everyday choices express a different priority, or a decision may be postponed because its consequences are difficult to acknowledge. The strain concerns how the connection is being lived. Recognizing it can clarify what needs to be said, chosen, or released without deciding in advance whether a bond should continue.

How the reversal changes the emphasis
The reversal does not negate love. It asks whether the way a connection is being lived agrees with what it claims to value.
The question changes the emphasis
Reading this card in context
Each spread gives its cards different roles. The examples below explore this card as an influence, a situation or challenge, and advice or support. Begin with the question your position asks, wherever it falls in the spread.
As an influence
Upright
A meaningful connection or values-based choice may have set the question in motion and still shape its stakes.
Reversed
An unresolved choice or earlier misalignment may still hover around the question, even if the connection itself remains meaningful.
As a situation or challenge
Upright
Consider whether desire, values, and present actions are moving together, and what any difference between them means for your choice.
Reversed
The distance between stated values and visible choices needs attention without turning that distance into a verdict.
As advice or support
Upright
Name the choice inside the connection, then let conduct show what words and desire alone cannot settle.
Reversed
Clarify the choice and the value it serves, then decide what action would make the agreement between them visible.
Read through a particular life focus
Open reading
Consider what you are drawn toward, what it asks you to commit to, and whether the choice fits the values you want to live.
Love & relationships
Look at the connection you are choosing or considering: what affection means to you, and whether expressed commitments fit the actions you can observe.
Work & direction
Consider which direction you want to commit to and how its actual demands fit what matters to you.
Home & family
Look at the agreements through which you share life with others and whether they give the different people involved room to choose honestly.
Self-growth
Notice where desire, conviction, and conduct support one another, and what you want to do about any difference among them.
Look a little closer
The imagery
Joined hands
The two figures face one another with their hands joined.
The gesture makes relationship visible as an active meeting, not merely an emotion or ideal.
Winged figure
A large winged figure opens both arms above the pair.
The open wings enlarge the choice before them, suggesting that intimacy can carry values and consequences beyond the immediate moment.
Paired gardens
Different flowering plants and trees rise on either side of the figures.
The distinct gardens preserve difference inside connection; joining does not require becoming identical.

Tradition & Lunaire’s interpretation
The traditional foundation
A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, Part II §2, The Lovers: human love, attraction, and covenant within an explicitly biblical and gendered scene; Waite distinguishes this design from the older image of a man choosing between vice and virtue. Compare Part III §3 for divinatory variants.
Lunaire’s reading
Lunaire retains love and connection while interpreting them through consequential choice: the relationship among desire, values, conduct, and commitment. This wider choice-and-alignment emphasis is Lunaire’s contemporary account, not a claim that Waite’s particular design is chiefly a choice between two options. The selected reversal concerns mismatch or avoided choice without forecasting the end of a bond.
